How to pull a wagon with your e-scooter and where it is allowed

With the Scitch trailer hitch and the wagon adapter, you can attach a standard handcart or folding wagon with a loop handle to your e-scooter. The adapter slides onto the hitch from above without tools and is secured with a wing screw. A clamp with a second wing screw encloses the wagon’s handle. On public roads this is not allowed in Germany and Austria, and in our assessment it is not allowed in Switzerland either. On private property it is usually possible with the operator’s consent.

A wagon is not a vehicle trailer

Handcarts and folding wagons are built to be pulled by hand, not by a vehicle. There are also very large differences in quality between models. A test of five folding wagons at CHIP (German) shows this too. It was carried out in 2021 by CHIP’s partner Das Haus. Criticisms included thin metal struts, small wheels and cheap tyres.

So only ride at walking pace when you pull a wagon with your e-scooter. Stick to the load limit stated by the manufacturer of your wagon and check the handle, wheels and frame before every ride. If you regularly want to move heavy loads, a cargo trailer is the better choice (comparison below).

Which wagons fit the adapter?

The adapter is made for handcarts and wagons with a loop handle. This means a closed handle at the end of the drawbar that the adapter’s clamp can enclose.

We have not tested specific brands or models. So check your wagon:

  • Does the drawbar have a closed loop handle?
  • Are the drawbar and handle firmly attached to the wagon without play?
  • Do the wheels run true, and are the axles firm?

The adapter only works together with the Scitch trailer hitch (product page in German). If you have neither yet, the hitch and adapter come together in the starter package (German).

How to attach the wagon

Scitch trailer hitch with wagon adapter: clamp with wing screws and hitch part with Scitch sticker

The hitch stays on the e-scooter, and the adapter is only added when needed.

  1. Mount the hitch on the deck: it is clamped to the deck with 4 screws, without drilling and without touching the steering, battery or brakes. A standard spanner is enough. The installation guide shows the steps.
  2. Fit the adapter: place the wagon adapter onto the hitch from above.
  3. Secure the adapter: tighten the wing screw that holds the adapter on the hitch firmly by hand.
  4. Connect the handle: place the wagon’s loop handle into the open clamp and close the clamp by hand with the second wing screw.
  5. Check: pull and shake the handle. If everything is secure, you can set off at walking pace.

To detach, follow the steps in reverse order. Nothing on the wagon is modified, so after detaching you pull it by hand as usual. The hitch comes in three sizes by deck width (S, M, L) and with mounting kits for different deck thicknesses. If in doubt, choose the next size up.

Wagon or cargo trailer, which suits what?

Whether a wagon is enough depends on how often you carry loads and how heavy they are. The table shows the three options you have with the Scitch hitch.

Wagon with adapter Cargo trailer (Vevor) Bicycle trailer with Thule adapter
Built to be pulled by a vehicle no, for pulling by hand yes yes, for bicycles
Speed walking pace only as stated by the manufacturer as stated by the manufacturer
Load as stated by the wagon’s manufacturer up to 72 kg, recommended up to 50 kg for e-scooters (product page) as stated by the trailer’s manufacturer
Connection adapter clamp encloses the loop handle own coupling unit attached at the bicycle axle
Makes sense if you already have a wagon and ride short distances you regularly move loads you already have a suitable bicycle trailer

The folding cargo trailer for e-scooters (German) weighs 13 kg according to the product page and can be folded flat. According to our FAQ, bicycle trailers from Thule, Croozer, Qeridoo and Burley, among others, fit. Other options for luggage and shopping are covered in our guide on carrying luggage on an e-scooter.

Where can you ride with a wagon on your e-scooter?

We treat a wagon that is being pulled like a trailer. For trailers on e-scooters, the following applies:

  • Germany: trailer operation with e-scooters is not permitted on public roads (§ 8 eKFV, German). The fine has so far been 10 euros.
  • Austria: since 1 May 2026, pulling a trailer with an e-scooter is not permitted (Federal Law Gazette BGBl. I No. 17/2026, German).
  • Switzerland: a trailer on an e-scooter (E-Trottinett) is permitted if the combination is safe to operate. Trailer and load together may weigh no more than 80 kg. Including the load, the trailer may be no more than 1.00 m wide. The load may overhang by no more than 50 cm at the rear (Art. 68 Para. 7 VRV, German). A wagon is built to be pulled by hand. We therefore assume that it does not count as safe to operate behind an e-scooter. So it is not permitted on public roads in Switzerland either. If you want to carry loads on public roads in Switzerland, you need a trailer that is built for towing and meets the conditions above.
  • Private property: operation there is usually permitted with the operator’s consent, for example on your own land, on a campsite or on company premises.

Not every e-scooter insurance policy covers operation with a trailer. Ask your insurer beforehand. More on the individual countries is on our page E-scooter with a trailer: what is allowed?. This is not legal advice. Status: October 2026.

What a wagon on an e-scooter is useful for

A wagon is the solution for short distances on private property if you already own one. Typical uses:

  • Garden and grounds: soil, garden tools or firewood from the shed to the flower bed.
  • Campsite: luggage from the car park to the pitch, drinks or laundry, with the site operator’s consent.
  • Company premises: materials between the hall and the warehouse.
  • Festival and leisure grounds: equipment from the car park to the tent, as far as the organiser allows.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need tools for the wagon adapter?

No. The adapter slides onto the hitch from above and is secured with a wing screw. A second wing screw closes the clamp around the handle. Both are done by hand. You only need tools once, to mount the hitch on the deck, and a standard spanner is enough.

Does the adapter fit without the Scitch hitch?

No. The wagon adapter (German) can only be used in combination with the Scitch trailer hitch.

How fast should I ride with a wagon?

Only ride at walking pace. Wagons are not built to be pulled by a vehicle, and quality varies greatly from model to model.

Which hitch size do I need?

That depends on the width of your deck: S under 17 cm, M from 17.1 to 22 cm, L from 22.1 to 25 cm. The right mounting kit depends on the thickness of the deck. If in doubt, choose the next size up.

E-Scooter Horn or Bell? What Is Required and What Is Allowed

In Germany every e-scooter must have a bell with a clear tone. You may only fit a horn in addition to it, and only if it is approved under the rules for light motorcycles. Sirens and other acoustic signalling devices are prohibited. In Austria a bell or a horn is mandatory. Loud horns without approval are meant for private property, not for the road.

On this page you will find the rules for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. We also explain the difference between a bell, an approved horn and an alarm horn, and show how to fit a horn to your handlebar.

Does the law require a bell or a horn?

Which sound signal your e-scooter needs depends on the country you ride in.

Country Required Horn in addition to or instead of the bell Source
Germany bell with a clear tone allowed in addition if approved under UN ECE Regulation No. 28; sirens and other signalling devices prohibited § 6 eKFV
Austria bell or horn horn possible instead of a bell § 68a StVO, oesterreich.gv.at
Switzerland clearly audible bell instead of the bell, a warning device under UNECE Regulation No. 28 or EU rules; other warning devices prohibited Art. 178b VTS

In Germany the rule is set out in § 6 of the Electric Small Vehicles Ordinance (eKFV) (German). The sentence “Wheel-driven bells, sirens or other acoustic signalling devices are not permitted” (our translation) was added when the ordinance was amended in 2026. The new construction rules apply to e-scooters placed on the market for the first time from 1 April 2026. Older models are covered by the previous version.

In Austria a bell or horn has been mandatory equipment since 1 May 2026. Reflectors and indicators at the ends of the handlebar are also required (oesterreich.gv.at, German).

In Switzerland e-scooters, called E-Trottinette there, count as mopeds. They need a clearly audible bell. Instead of the bell, a warning device under UNECE Regulation No. 28 or EU Regulations No. 168/2013 and 3/2014 is permitted. Other warning devices are prohibited (Art. 178b VTS, German).

When is a horn on an e-scooter allowed in Germany?

In Germany a horn is only allowed in addition to the bell and must meet the same requirements as the horn of a light motorcycle. So the bell always stays on the handlebar.

§ 6 eKFV names UN ECE Regulation No. 28 and Annex II of Regulation (EU) No. 3/2014. When you buy a horn, ask for proof of this approval. Without that proof, the horn is not permitted on public roads.

The following are not allowed:

  • sirens
  • wheel-driven bells
  • other acoustic signalling devices

What a loud horn with an alarm is meant for

Our e-scooter horn from ehaltig (product page in German) is meant for private property and closed-off routes. It has no approval under UN ECE Regulation No. 28, is not approved for public road traffic and must not be used there.

The horn reaches up to 130 dB, has several selectable tones and a built-in anti-theft alarm that is also active when the scooter is parked. It charges via USB-C. It is weatherproof and is fixed to the handlebar with extra-long rubber straps that also fit wide handlebars.

It is useful where a clear signal helps and the operator allows it. Examples are campsites, company premises, marinas or closed-off routes. If you also use your e-scooter there for transport, you will find suitable options in our guide on carrying luggage on an e-scooter.

How to fit a horn to your e-scooter

What is in the box: horn, rubber rings, handlebar bracket and USB-C cable

If the horn is fixed with rubber straps, you do not need any tools. Here is how:

  1. Check where you ride: on public roads only an approved horn, on private property with the operator’s consent an alarm horn as well.
  2. Leave the bell on the handlebar. In Germany it is mandatory, even if you add a horn.
  3. Choose a spot on the handlebar where the horn does not cover the brake levers, lights, indicators or display.
  4. Attach the horn with the straps or the manufacturer’s bracket and check that it does not twist when you steer.
  5. Charge the battery before the first ride and test the tones once while standing still.

Frequently asked questions

Does a horn replace the bell on an e-scooter?

Not in Germany. The bell with a clear tone is mandatory and a horn can only be added. In Austria a bell or a horn is required. In Switzerland an approved warning device under UNECE Regulation No. 28 may be fitted instead of the bell.

Is an alarm system on an e-scooter allowed?

In Germany “sirens or other acoustic signalling devices” are not permitted on e-scooters (§ 6 eKFV). A horn with an alarm function like ours is therefore meant for private property.

Does this also apply to electric scooters with a seat?

The rules on this page apply to stand-up e-scooters. Electric scooters with a seat are not covered in this article.

How loud may a horn on an e-scooter be?

§ 6 eKFV does not set a fixed volume limit. Instead, the horn has to meet the requirements of UN ECE Regulation No. 28. The volume figure alone therefore says nothing about whether a horn is allowed on public roads.

As of October 2026. This is not legal advice. More on the legal situation is on our page E-scooter with a trailer: what is allowed?, and more accessories are in our shop (German).

How to Carry Luggage on an E-Scooter with a Bag, Top Case or Trailer

As of October 2026 · Scitch GmbH, manufacturer of the Scitch trailer hitch for e-scooters

To carry luggage on an e-scooter, choose the solution by volume and weight. A 3 litre bag is enough for a lock, power bank and charger. A helmet, rain jacket or small shopping trip fits into a 14 litre top case that holds up to 7 kg. Crates of drinks and the weekly shopping belong in a trailer.

Most e-scooters do not come with a luggage rack. On this page we compare backpack, bag, top case and trailer with dimensions and weights. We also show how much load capacity your scooter has left with luggage, and where you are allowed to ride with a trailer.

What are the ways to carry luggage on an e-scooter?

There are five ways to carry luggage on an e-scooter: backpack, bag, top case, cargo trailer and box trailer. They differ in how much volume and weight they take, and in whether the load sits on the scooter or rolls on its own wheels.

Solution Volume Weight Good for Load sits on
Backpack depends on model you carry it laptop, clothes, small shopping you
E-scooter bag 3 l small items lock, power bank, charger, tools the scooter
Top case (Touring-Tresor) 14 l up to 7 kg helmet depending on shape, rain jacket, small shopping the hitch on the deck
Cargo trailer (Vevor) about 110 l manufacturer up to 72 kg, our recommendation on an e-scooter 50 kg at most weekly shopping, drinks, camping gear its own wheels
Box trailer (Hinterher) 73, 115, 137 or 156 l 65 kg including trailer, so 42.5 to 50.6 kg load closed transport, tools its own wheels

The transport box of the cargo trailer measures 71 x 51.5 x 30 cm. That is about 110 litres, almost eight times the space of the top case.

Is a backpack enough for the commute?

For a laptop and a change of clothes, a backpack is usually enough, because nothing has to be mounted on the scooter. With heavy shopping or on longer rides it becomes uncomfortable. Make sure straps and cords do not hang down, so nothing gets caught in the wheels.

What fits into an e-scooter bag?

An e-scooter bag holds the things you want to have with you on every ride, such as a lock, power bank, charger or tools. The 3 litre e-scooter bag from ehaltig has a hard shell, a zip all the way round and a bungee cord on the outside for gloves.

It is fixed with clamps and an adapter plate that come in the mounting kit. It is too small for shopping. It works best alongside a backpack or the top case.

3 litre e-scooter bag mounted on the scooter

How much fits into a top case on an e-scooter?

A top case on an e-scooter gives you lockable storage of 14 litres for up to 7 kg. That is enough for a helmet depending on its shape, a rain jacket or a small shopping trip. Our top case set with hitch consists of the Scitch hitch, an adapter plate and the Touring-Tresor case.

The case measures 367 x 273 x 227 mm on the outside, is weatherproof, lockable and made in Germany. It sits on the hitch, which is clamped to the deck with four screws. You do not have to drill, and the hitch can be removed again. If you already have the hitch, the case is also available on its own as an add-on.

With the top case fitted, the hitch can still take a trailer. You can use both at the same time.

Open 14 litre top case on an e-scooter

When do you need a trailer on an e-scooter?

You need a trailer as soon as your luggage weighs more than 7 kg or does not fit into 14 litres, for example crates of drinks, the weekly shopping or camping gear. The trailer carries the load on its own wheels instead of putting it on the scooter.

Our cargo trailer from Vevor weighs 13 kg and folds down to 760 x 595 x 185 mm. The manufacturer states a load capacity of up to 72 kg. For use on an e-scooter we recommend 50 kg at most. Together with the hitch it comes in the saver bundle with cargo trailer and hitch.

E-scooter with cargo trailer on the Scitch hitch on a path by the water

If you already have a bike trailer, you can often keep using it. There is a Thule adapter for Thule trailers, and a handcart adapter for handcarts and wagons with a handle. Which trailer brands fit is listed in our FAQ on sizes and compatible trailers.

For the hitch to sit properly, it has to match your deck. The size depends on the width of the deck, the mounting kit on its thickness. There are six mounting kits.

Hitch Deck width
S under 17 cm
M 17.1 to 22 cm
L 22.1 to 25 cm

The hitch fits almost all common e-scooters, provided the dimensions in the table match. If in doubt, choose the next size up.

How much weight can your e-scooter carry with luggage?

How much your e-scooter may carry is stated as the maximum load in the user manual or data sheet. This includes your body weight, clothes, backpack and everything attached to the scooter. According to the manufacturer VMAX, more weight also lengthens the braking distance and reduces the range (VMAX guide on load capacity, German).

A worked example with the VMAX VX2 Pro, which according to the manufacturer may carry 130 kg:

Item Weight
You with clothes 85 kg
Backpack 5 kg
Top case fully loaded 7 kg
Total 97 kg
Reserve up to 130 kg 33 kg

With a scooter rated for 100 kg, the same example would leave only 3 kg in reserve.

A trailer carries its load itself. It still pulls on the scooter, and more total weight lengthens the braking distance. With a trailer, ride more slowly and leave more distance for braking.

Where are you allowed to ride with luggage and a trailer?

Whether you may pull a trailer with an e-scooter depends on the country. In Germany and Austria it is not allowed on public roads, in Switzerland it is allowed under conditions. On private property it is usually possible with the operator’s consent (as of October 2026, not legal advice).

Country Trailer in public traffic What else applies
Germany not permitted (§ 8 eKFV) fine so far 10 euros
Austria not allowed since 1 May 2026 (§ 68a para. 2 StVO) goods only in a container for a helmet or small items, no bags or backpacks on the handlebar grips
Switzerland allowed if the combination is safe to operate width including load 1.00 m at most, trailer and load 80 kg at most, load overhang at the rear 50 cm at most

In Germany, using a trailer with an e-scooter in public road traffic is not permitted (§ 8 eKFV, German). This ban remains in place after the amendment of the eKFV. Use is usually allowed on private property such as campsites, marinas or company premises if the operator agrees.

In Austria the 36th amendment of the road traffic regulations (StVO) has applied since 1 May 2026. Under it, pulling a trailer with an e-scooter is not allowed. Goods may only be carried in a container for a helmet or other small items, and bags or backpacks hung on the handlebar grips are prohibited (BGBl. I Nr. 17/2026, German). On private property that is not open to the public, a trailer is usually possible with the operator’s consent.

In Switzerland, trailers on e-scooters are allowed if the combination is safe to operate and the limits in the table are met (ASTRA, as of 1 July 2025). Our cargo trailer comes to 63 kg with its own weight of 13 kg and a load of 50 kg at most.

Not every e-scooter insurance covers use with a trailer. Ask your insurer before you ride. More details with sources are on our page about the legal situation for e-scooters with a trailer.

How to load an e-scooter and trailer safely

Luggage should be secure and must not cover lights or reflectors.

  1. Put heavy items in the trailer, low and in the middle, and light items in the bag or top case.
  2. Before riding, check that straps, cords and shopping bags are well away from the wheels.
  3. Test braking with luggage in an open area before you set off.
  4. Stay within your scooter’s load limit and count the backpack and top case.
  5. Lock the top case when you park the scooter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit a luggage rack to my e-scooter?

Some manufacturers offer their own racks for certain models, but most e-scooters have no mounting point for one. The Scitch hitch creates a mounting point on the deck, on which the top case is fitted. You do not need to drill or touch the steering, battery or brakes.

Does a helmet fit into the top case?

The Touring-Tresor top case holds 14 litres and has room for a helmet or a rain jacket. Whether your helmet fits depends on its shape and size. The case measures 367 x 273 x 227 mm on the outside and is slightly smaller inside.

Can I use the top case and a trailer at the same time?

Yes. The top case sits on the Scitch hitch, and the trailer still attaches to the same hitch.

Can I attach my existing handcart to the e-scooter?

For handcarts and wagons with a handle there is the handcart adapter. It is screwed onto the Scitch hitch. For Thule bike trailers there is a separate Thule adapter.

Can I pull a trailer with an e-scooter on the road?

Not in Germany or Austria, where using a trailer with an e-scooter in public traffic is prohibited. In Switzerland it is allowed if the combination is safe to operate and the trailer and load weigh 80 kg at most. On private property it is usually possible with the operator’s consent (as of October 2026, not legal advice).

How much luggage can I take on an e-scooter?

That depends on your scooter’s maximum load, which is stated in the user manual. Your body weight, clothes and luggage all count. The top case takes up to 7 kg. Anything heavier belongs in a trailer, because it carries the load on its own wheels.

Which solution suits you?

If you mainly carry small items, the bag is enough. For a helmet and shopping on the way home, the top case fits. For anything over 7 kg you need a trailer, and you check first whether it is allowed in your country and on your route. Before ordering, measure the width and thickness of your deck so that the hitch and mounting kit fit. If you have questions, you can reach us through the contact form.

Which E-Scooter Is Suitable for a Trailer?

Article in cooperation with Mikrofahrzeuge

An e-scooter gets you from A to B with little effort. With a trailer from Scitch (German), it becomes a compact transport solution for tools, camping gear or shopping on suitable premises. But not every scooter that rides well in everyday use is automatically a good towing vehicle. Additional mass changes how it pulls away, corners and brakes, and how far it can actually go.

High motor power is therefore only part of the answer. What matters more is how brakes, tyres, suspension, range reserve, vehicle geometry and a secure attachment work together. Before buying, you should also clarify where the combination will be used and which rules apply there.

1. Clarify where you will ride first

In Germany, using a trailer with an electric small vehicle in public road traffic is not permitted. This is set out in section 8 of the Electric Small Vehicles Ordinance (eKFV). On private premises that are genuinely not public, other conditions may apply. However, a freely accessible campsite, company yard or car park is not private in the sense of traffic law just because it belongs to a private operator. What counts is access and actual use. If in doubt, the operator should check the conditions.

So the place of use comes before the technology. If you plan to ride abroad, you also have to follow the national rules that apply there. Scitch summarises the differences in the guide E-Scooter with Trailer: What is allowed?.

2. Do not look at motor power in isolation

When looking for an e-scooter with good pulling power (German), the wattage quickly catches the eye. But it only helps if it is clear which power is meant. The continuous rated power describes the power that can be delivered permanently under defined conditions. A peak power that is only reached briefly is not the same. For electric small vehicles under the German eKFV, the permitted continuous rated power is generally 500 watts at most.

For pulling away with a load, the tuning of motor and controller, the state of charge of the battery, the rider’s weight, the gradient and the surface also count. A scooter can feel strong on a flat route and still slow down noticeably on a longer climb or reduce its power to protect the components. If you want to move loads regularly, you should not buy based on the highest power figure alone.

3. Brakes need controllable reserves

More moving mass needs particular attention when slowing down. With a trailer, the reaction and tracking of the combination can change, especially on downhill stretches, in the wet or with badly distributed cargo. Brakes that can be applied precisely and are in perfect technical condition are therefore important. The eKFV requires two independent brakes for approved electric small vehicles. This legal minimum, however, does not replace an assessment of the specific use.

Before riding, check that the brake levers have a clear pressure point, nothing rubs, and the pads and discs are not worn or dirty. An electronic regenerative brake can support the mechanical brake in everyday use. What matters most for the choice, however, is whether the whole braking system can be operated predictably. A recent ADAC test (German) also shows that not only maximum braking power but also the response is decisive for control.

4. Plan with real range, not the brochure figure

Range figures are often produced under favourable test conditions. In its e-scooter test 2026, the ADAC (German) found in some cases clear differences between manufacturer figures and measurements under more realistic conditions. Additional load increases this uncertainty.

How far you actually get with a trailer depends on, among other things:

  • rider weight and the weight of trailer and cargo
  • gradients, surface and frequent starts
  • temperature, wind and the riding mode chosen
  • tyre pressure and rolling resistance
  • age, condition and temperature of the battery

A fixed percentage for the loss of range would not be serious, because conditions differ too much. Keep your first trip deliberately short, watch the consumption and keep a clear reserve for the way back. On large campsites or company premises in particular, your own consumption profile tells you more than the brochure figure.

5. Tyres and suspension determine stability

Tyres are the only connection between vehicle and ground. Sufficient tread, correct air pressure and undamaged sidewalls are therefore basic requirements. Pressure that is too low increases rolling resistance and can make handling vague. Pressure that is too high can reduce comfort and grip on poor surfaces. The range approved by the manufacturer always applies.

Larger tyres and well tuned suspension can make bumps easier to handle, but they do not replace an appropriate speed. Also check for play in the steering and the folding mechanism. Under additional load, loose connections or worn bearings show up faster. A scooter that feels stable is only a good choice if its parts can be checked regularly and repaired when needed.

6. Do not confuse load capacity with trailer load

The maximum load of an e-scooter usually means the load the vehicle may carry according to the manufacturer. It does not automatically tell you which trailer the scooter may pull. Trailer weight, cargo, nose or hitch load and dynamic forces when pulling away or braking have to be considered separately.

So check the specifications of the scooter manufacturer, the hitch and the trailer one by one. All of them must be met. The scooter’s maximum load cannot be converted into a permitted trailer load. If there is no manufacturer approval for use with a trailer, it must not be derived from individual technical figures either.

7. Hitch, geometry and cargo have to fit together

A secure connection starts with the right fit. Deck width, mudguard, mounting point, drawbar height and freedom of movement in bends have to match. The hitch (German) must not interfere with the brake or any moving parts of the vehicle. After fitting, all screw connections should be checked as described in the instructions.

Cargo distribution is at least as important. Heavy items belong as low as possible in the trailer and secured so that they cannot slide. Loading on one side can make the combination unsteady in bends. Before the first transport trip, a short test without cargo is advisable, followed by a test with a light load at low speed. Information on fitting is in the Scitch fitting overview.

8. Think about spare parts and maintenance

A suitable towing vehicle should not only work on the first day. Tyres, brake pads, bearings and mechanical connections are wear parts or components under heavy strain. If you often use the scooter for transport, do not wait to check it until noises, vibrations or a changed braking feel appear.

Before buying, check whether suitable parts are available for the specific model. With e-scooter spare parts and accessories (German), design, dimensions and electrical connections sometimes differ considerably. The exact model name and, where applicable, the serial or version number should therefore be checked before every order.

Long-term supply of spare parts also plays a role in the buying decision. Mikrofahrzeuge.com (German) offers various e-scooters as well as model-specific spare parts, accessories and a repair service. This is particularly useful for vehicles that are used regularly and should not be replaced after the first defect.

Check before every ride

  • Hitch, adapter and locking parts are firmly in place.
  • Tyres have the specified pressure and show no damage.
  • Both brakes work and can be applied in a controlled way.
  • The cargo is evenly distributed and secured against sliding.
  • Steering, folding mechanism and wheels have no noticeable play.
  • The battery has enough reserve for the way there and back.
  • The planned use is permitted on the premises in question.

Frequently asked questions

Can any e-scooter pull a trailer?

No. Whether an e-scooter is technically suitable depends on, among other things, the manufacturer’s specifications, the attachment options, brakes, suspension and conditions of use. A high maximum load or motor power alone is no proof that it is suitable as a towing vehicle.

Can an e-scooter with a trailer go on the road in Germany?

No. Under section 8 of the Electric Small Vehicles Ordinance, using a trailer with an electric small vehicle in public road traffic is not permitted. On private premises that are not public, the specific access and use conditions have to be checked.

How much does a trailer reduce the range?

This cannot be answered seriously with a fixed percentage. Trailer weight, cargo, gradients, temperature, wind, riding style and tyre pressure all affect consumption. The range should first be determined on a short, familiar route with enough battery reserve.

Is a stronger motor automatically better?

No. Besides the continuous rated power, the tuning of motor and controller, brakes, riding stability, battery and thermal reserves all count. Peak power figures advertised for short periods cannot be compared directly with the power that is available permanently.

Which parts should be checked with frequent use?

Tyres, brake pads, brake discs, wheel bearings, steering, folding mechanism, hitch and all screw connections are particularly important. Unusual noises, vibrations, loss of pressure or a changed braking feel should also be looked at promptly.

What should I pay particular attention to on gradients?

On gradients, energy demand and the load on the drive increase. What matters is not only motor power and battery level, but also total weight, surface and the length of the climb. On the downhill stretch that follows, there must also be enough braking reserve.
