How to pull a wagon with your e-scooter and where it is allowed

With the Scitch trailer hitch and the wagon adapter, you can attach a standard handcart or folding wagon with a loop handle to your e-scooter. The adapter slides onto the hitch from above without tools and is secured with a wing screw. A clamp with a second wing screw encloses the wagon’s handle. On public roads this is not allowed in Germany and Austria, and in our assessment it is not allowed in Switzerland either. On private property it is usually possible with the operator’s consent.

A wagon is not a vehicle trailer

Handcarts and folding wagons are built to be pulled by hand, not by a vehicle. There are also very large differences in quality between models. A test of five folding wagons at CHIP (German) shows this too. It was carried out in 2021 by CHIP’s partner Das Haus. Criticisms included thin metal struts, small wheels and cheap tyres.

So only ride at walking pace when you pull a wagon with your e-scooter. Stick to the load limit stated by the manufacturer of your wagon and check the handle, wheels and frame before every ride. If you regularly want to move heavy loads, a cargo trailer is the better choice (comparison below).

Which wagons fit the adapter?

The adapter is made for handcarts and wagons with a loop handle. This means a closed handle at the end of the drawbar that the adapter’s clamp can enclose.

We have not tested specific brands or models. So check your wagon:

  • Does the drawbar have a closed loop handle?
  • Are the drawbar and handle firmly attached to the wagon without play?
  • Do the wheels run true, and are the axles firm?

The adapter only works together with the Scitch trailer hitch (product page in German). If you have neither yet, the hitch and adapter come together in the starter package (German).

How to attach the wagon

Scitch trailer hitch with wagon adapter: clamp with wing screws and hitch part with Scitch sticker

The hitch stays on the e-scooter, and the adapter is only added when needed.

  1. Mount the hitch on the deck: it is clamped to the deck with 4 screws, without drilling and without touching the steering, battery or brakes. A standard spanner is enough. The installation guide shows the steps.
  2. Fit the adapter: place the wagon adapter onto the hitch from above.
  3. Secure the adapter: tighten the wing screw that holds the adapter on the hitch firmly by hand.
  4. Connect the handle: place the wagon’s loop handle into the open clamp and close the clamp by hand with the second wing screw.
  5. Check: pull and shake the handle. If everything is secure, you can set off at walking pace.

To detach, follow the steps in reverse order. Nothing on the wagon is modified, so after detaching you pull it by hand as usual. The hitch comes in three sizes by deck width (S, M, L) and with mounting kits for different deck thicknesses. If in doubt, choose the next size up.

Wagon or cargo trailer, which suits what?

Whether a wagon is enough depends on how often you carry loads and how heavy they are. The table shows the three options you have with the Scitch hitch.

Wagon with adapter Cargo trailer (Vevor) Bicycle trailer with Thule adapter
Built to be pulled by a vehicle no, for pulling by hand yes yes, for bicycles
Speed walking pace only as stated by the manufacturer as stated by the manufacturer
Load as stated by the wagon’s manufacturer up to 72 kg, recommended up to 50 kg for e-scooters (product page) as stated by the trailer’s manufacturer
Connection adapter clamp encloses the loop handle own coupling unit attached at the bicycle axle
Makes sense if you already have a wagon and ride short distances you regularly move loads you already have a suitable bicycle trailer

The folding cargo trailer for e-scooters (German) weighs 13 kg according to the product page and can be folded flat. According to our FAQ, bicycle trailers from Thule, Croozer, Qeridoo and Burley, among others, fit. Other options for luggage and shopping are covered in our guide on carrying luggage on an e-scooter.

Where can you ride with a wagon on your e-scooter?

We treat a wagon that is being pulled like a trailer. For trailers on e-scooters, the following applies:

  • Germany: trailer operation with e-scooters is not permitted on public roads (§ 8 eKFV, German). The fine has so far been 10 euros.
  • Austria: since 1 May 2026, pulling a trailer with an e-scooter is not permitted (Federal Law Gazette BGBl. I No. 17/2026, German).
  • Switzerland: a trailer on an e-scooter (E-Trottinett) is permitted if the combination is safe to operate. Trailer and load together may weigh no more than 80 kg. Including the load, the trailer may be no more than 1.00 m wide. The load may overhang by no more than 50 cm at the rear (Art. 68 Para. 7 VRV, German). A wagon is built to be pulled by hand. We therefore assume that it does not count as safe to operate behind an e-scooter. So it is not permitted on public roads in Switzerland either. If you want to carry loads on public roads in Switzerland, you need a trailer that is built for towing and meets the conditions above.
  • Private property: operation there is usually permitted with the operator’s consent, for example on your own land, on a campsite or on company premises.

Not every e-scooter insurance policy covers operation with a trailer. Ask your insurer beforehand. More on the individual countries is on our page E-scooter with a trailer: what is allowed?. This is not legal advice. Status: October 2026.

What a wagon on an e-scooter is useful for

A wagon is the solution for short distances on private property if you already own one. Typical uses:

  • Garden and grounds: soil, garden tools or firewood from the shed to the flower bed.
  • Campsite: luggage from the car park to the pitch, drinks or laundry, with the site operator’s consent.
  • Company premises: materials between the hall and the warehouse.
  • Festival and leisure grounds: equipment from the car park to the tent, as far as the organiser allows.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need tools for the wagon adapter?

No. The adapter slides onto the hitch from above and is secured with a wing screw. A second wing screw closes the clamp around the handle. Both are done by hand. You only need tools once, to mount the hitch on the deck, and a standard spanner is enough.

Does the adapter fit without the Scitch hitch?

No. The wagon adapter (German) can only be used in combination with the Scitch trailer hitch.

How fast should I ride with a wagon?

Only ride at walking pace. Wagons are not built to be pulled by a vehicle, and quality varies greatly from model to model.

Which hitch size do I need?

That depends on the width of your deck: S under 17 cm, M from 17.1 to 22 cm, L from 22.1 to 25 cm. The right mounting kit depends on the thickness of the deck. If in doubt, choose the next size up.

E-Scooter Horn or Bell? What Is Required and What Is Allowed

In Germany every e-scooter must have a bell with a clear tone. You may only fit a horn in addition to it, and only if it is approved under the rules for light motorcycles. Sirens and other acoustic signalling devices are prohibited. In Austria a bell or a horn is mandatory. Loud horns without approval are meant for private property, not for the road.

On this page you will find the rules for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. We also explain the difference between a bell, an approved horn and an alarm horn, and show how to fit a horn to your handlebar.

Does the law require a bell or a horn?

Which sound signal your e-scooter needs depends on the country you ride in.

Country Required Horn in addition to or instead of the bell Source
Germany bell with a clear tone allowed in addition if approved under UN ECE Regulation No. 28; sirens and other signalling devices prohibited § 6 eKFV
Austria bell or horn horn possible instead of a bell § 68a StVO, oesterreich.gv.at
Switzerland clearly audible bell instead of the bell, a warning device under UNECE Regulation No. 28 or EU rules; other warning devices prohibited Art. 178b VTS

In Germany the rule is set out in § 6 of the Electric Small Vehicles Ordinance (eKFV) (German). The sentence “Wheel-driven bells, sirens or other acoustic signalling devices are not permitted” (our translation) was added when the ordinance was amended in 2026. The new construction rules apply to e-scooters placed on the market for the first time from 1 April 2026. Older models are covered by the previous version.

In Austria a bell or horn has been mandatory equipment since 1 May 2026. Reflectors and indicators at the ends of the handlebar are also required (oesterreich.gv.at, German).

In Switzerland e-scooters, called E-Trottinette there, count as mopeds. They need a clearly audible bell. Instead of the bell, a warning device under UNECE Regulation No. 28 or EU Regulations No. 168/2013 and 3/2014 is permitted. Other warning devices are prohibited (Art. 178b VTS, German).

When is a horn on an e-scooter allowed in Germany?

In Germany a horn is only allowed in addition to the bell and must meet the same requirements as the horn of a light motorcycle. So the bell always stays on the handlebar.

§ 6 eKFV names UN ECE Regulation No. 28 and Annex II of Regulation (EU) No. 3/2014. When you buy a horn, ask for proof of this approval. Without that proof, the horn is not permitted on public roads.

The following are not allowed:

  • sirens
  • wheel-driven bells
  • other acoustic signalling devices

What a loud horn with an alarm is meant for

Our e-scooter horn from ehaltig (product page in German) is meant for private property and closed-off routes. It has no approval under UN ECE Regulation No. 28, is not approved for public road traffic and must not be used there.

The horn reaches up to 130 dB, has several selectable tones and a built-in anti-theft alarm that is also active when the scooter is parked. It charges via USB-C. It is weatherproof and is fixed to the handlebar with extra-long rubber straps that also fit wide handlebars.

It is useful where a clear signal helps and the operator allows it. Examples are campsites, company premises, marinas or closed-off routes. If you also use your e-scooter there for transport, you will find suitable options in our guide on carrying luggage on an e-scooter.

How to fit a horn to your e-scooter

What is in the box: horn, rubber rings, handlebar bracket and USB-C cable

If the horn is fixed with rubber straps, you do not need any tools. Here is how:

  1. Check where you ride: on public roads only an approved horn, on private property with the operator’s consent an alarm horn as well.
  2. Leave the bell on the handlebar. In Germany it is mandatory, even if you add a horn.
  3. Choose a spot on the handlebar where the horn does not cover the brake levers, lights, indicators or display.
  4. Attach the horn with the straps or the manufacturer’s bracket and check that it does not twist when you steer.
  5. Charge the battery before the first ride and test the tones once while standing still.

Frequently asked questions

Does a horn replace the bell on an e-scooter?

Not in Germany. The bell with a clear tone is mandatory and a horn can only be added. In Austria a bell or a horn is required. In Switzerland an approved warning device under UNECE Regulation No. 28 may be fitted instead of the bell.

Is an alarm system on an e-scooter allowed?

In Germany “sirens or other acoustic signalling devices” are not permitted on e-scooters (§ 6 eKFV). A horn with an alarm function like ours is therefore meant for private property.

Does this also apply to electric scooters with a seat?

The rules on this page apply to stand-up e-scooters. Electric scooters with a seat are not covered in this article.

How loud may a horn on an e-scooter be?

§ 6 eKFV does not set a fixed volume limit. Instead, the horn has to meet the requirements of UN ECE Regulation No. 28. The volume figure alone therefore says nothing about whether a horn is allowed on public roads.

As of October 2026. This is not legal advice. More on the legal situation is on our page E-scooter with a trailer: what is allowed?, and more accessories are in our shop (German).

How to Carry Luggage on an E-Scooter with a Bag, Top Case or Trailer

As of October 2026 · Scitch GmbH, manufacturer of the Scitch trailer hitch for e-scooters

To carry luggage on an e-scooter, choose the solution by volume and weight. A 3 litre bag is enough for a lock, power bank and charger. A helmet, rain jacket or small shopping trip fits into a 14 litre top case that holds up to 7 kg. Crates of drinks and the weekly shopping belong in a trailer.

Most e-scooters do not come with a luggage rack. On this page we compare backpack, bag, top case and trailer with dimensions and weights. We also show how much load capacity your scooter has left with luggage, and where you are allowed to ride with a trailer.

What are the ways to carry luggage on an e-scooter?

There are five ways to carry luggage on an e-scooter: backpack, bag, top case, cargo trailer and box trailer. They differ in how much volume and weight they take, and in whether the load sits on the scooter or rolls on its own wheels.

Solution Volume Weight Good for Load sits on
Backpack depends on model you carry it laptop, clothes, small shopping you
E-scooter bag 3 l small items lock, power bank, charger, tools the scooter
Top case (Touring-Tresor) 14 l up to 7 kg helmet depending on shape, rain jacket, small shopping the hitch on the deck
Cargo trailer (Vevor) about 110 l manufacturer up to 72 kg, our recommendation on an e-scooter 50 kg at most weekly shopping, drinks, camping gear its own wheels
Box trailer (Hinterher) 73, 115, 137 or 156 l 65 kg including trailer, so 42.5 to 50.6 kg load closed transport, tools its own wheels

The transport box of the cargo trailer measures 71 x 51.5 x 30 cm. That is about 110 litres, almost eight times the space of the top case.

Is a backpack enough for the commute?

For a laptop and a change of clothes, a backpack is usually enough, because nothing has to be mounted on the scooter. With heavy shopping or on longer rides it becomes uncomfortable. Make sure straps and cords do not hang down, so nothing gets caught in the wheels.

What fits into an e-scooter bag?

An e-scooter bag holds the things you want to have with you on every ride, such as a lock, power bank, charger or tools. The 3 litre e-scooter bag from ehaltig has a hard shell, a zip all the way round and a bungee cord on the outside for gloves.

It is fixed with clamps and an adapter plate that come in the mounting kit. It is too small for shopping. It works best alongside a backpack or the top case.

3 litre e-scooter bag mounted on the scooter

How much fits into a top case on an e-scooter?

A top case on an e-scooter gives you lockable storage of 14 litres for up to 7 kg. That is enough for a helmet depending on its shape, a rain jacket or a small shopping trip. Our top case set with hitch consists of the Scitch hitch, an adapter plate and the Touring-Tresor case.

The case measures 367 x 273 x 227 mm on the outside, is weatherproof, lockable and made in Germany. It sits on the hitch, which is clamped to the deck with four screws. You do not have to drill, and the hitch can be removed again. If you already have the hitch, the case is also available on its own as an add-on.

With the top case fitted, the hitch can still take a trailer. You can use both at the same time.

Open 14 litre top case on an e-scooter

When do you need a trailer on an e-scooter?

You need a trailer as soon as your luggage weighs more than 7 kg or does not fit into 14 litres, for example crates of drinks, the weekly shopping or camping gear. The trailer carries the load on its own wheels instead of putting it on the scooter.

Our cargo trailer from Vevor weighs 13 kg and folds down to 760 x 595 x 185 mm. The manufacturer states a load capacity of up to 72 kg. For use on an e-scooter we recommend 50 kg at most. Together with the hitch it comes in the saver bundle with cargo trailer and hitch.

E-scooter with cargo trailer on the Scitch hitch on a path by the water

If you already have a bike trailer, you can often keep using it. There is a Thule adapter for Thule trailers, and a handcart adapter for handcarts and wagons with a handle. Which trailer brands fit is listed in our FAQ on sizes and compatible trailers.

For the hitch to sit properly, it has to match your deck. The size depends on the width of the deck, the mounting kit on its thickness. There are six mounting kits.

Hitch Deck width
S under 17 cm
M 17.1 to 22 cm
L 22.1 to 25 cm

The hitch fits almost all common e-scooters, provided the dimensions in the table match. If in doubt, choose the next size up.

How much weight can your e-scooter carry with luggage?

How much your e-scooter may carry is stated as the maximum load in the user manual or data sheet. This includes your body weight, clothes, backpack and everything attached to the scooter. According to the manufacturer VMAX, more weight also lengthens the braking distance and reduces the range (VMAX guide on load capacity, German).

A worked example with the VMAX VX2 Pro, which according to the manufacturer may carry 130 kg:

Item Weight
You with clothes 85 kg
Backpack 5 kg
Top case fully loaded 7 kg
Total 97 kg
Reserve up to 130 kg 33 kg

With a scooter rated for 100 kg, the same example would leave only 3 kg in reserve.

A trailer carries its load itself. It still pulls on the scooter, and more total weight lengthens the braking distance. With a trailer, ride more slowly and leave more distance for braking.

Where are you allowed to ride with luggage and a trailer?

Whether you may pull a trailer with an e-scooter depends on the country. In Germany and Austria it is not allowed on public roads, in Switzerland it is allowed under conditions. On private property it is usually possible with the operator’s consent (as of October 2026, not legal advice).

Country Trailer in public traffic What else applies
Germany not permitted (§ 8 eKFV) fine so far 10 euros
Austria not allowed since 1 May 2026 (§ 68a para. 2 StVO) goods only in a container for a helmet or small items, no bags or backpacks on the handlebar grips
Switzerland allowed if the combination is safe to operate width including load 1.00 m at most, trailer and load 80 kg at most, load overhang at the rear 50 cm at most

In Germany, using a trailer with an e-scooter in public road traffic is not permitted (§ 8 eKFV, German). This ban remains in place after the amendment of the eKFV. Use is usually allowed on private property such as campsites, marinas or company premises if the operator agrees.

In Austria the 36th amendment of the road traffic regulations (StVO) has applied since 1 May 2026. Under it, pulling a trailer with an e-scooter is not allowed. Goods may only be carried in a container for a helmet or other small items, and bags or backpacks hung on the handlebar grips are prohibited (BGBl. I Nr. 17/2026, German). On private property that is not open to the public, a trailer is usually possible with the operator’s consent.

In Switzerland, trailers on e-scooters are allowed if the combination is safe to operate and the limits in the table are met (ASTRA, as of 1 July 2025). Our cargo trailer comes to 63 kg with its own weight of 13 kg and a load of 50 kg at most.

Not every e-scooter insurance covers use with a trailer. Ask your insurer before you ride. More details with sources are on our page about the legal situation for e-scooters with a trailer.

How to load an e-scooter and trailer safely

Luggage should be secure and must not cover lights or reflectors.

  1. Put heavy items in the trailer, low and in the middle, and light items in the bag or top case.
  2. Before riding, check that straps, cords and shopping bags are well away from the wheels.
  3. Test braking with luggage in an open area before you set off.
  4. Stay within your scooter’s load limit and count the backpack and top case.
  5. Lock the top case when you park the scooter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit a luggage rack to my e-scooter?

Some manufacturers offer their own racks for certain models, but most e-scooters have no mounting point for one. The Scitch hitch creates a mounting point on the deck, on which the top case is fitted. You do not need to drill or touch the steering, battery or brakes.

Does a helmet fit into the top case?

The Touring-Tresor top case holds 14 litres and has room for a helmet or a rain jacket. Whether your helmet fits depends on its shape and size. The case measures 367 x 273 x 227 mm on the outside and is slightly smaller inside.

Can I use the top case and a trailer at the same time?

Yes. The top case sits on the Scitch hitch, and the trailer still attaches to the same hitch.

Can I attach my existing handcart to the e-scooter?

For handcarts and wagons with a handle there is the handcart adapter. It is screwed onto the Scitch hitch. For Thule bike trailers there is a separate Thule adapter.

Can I pull a trailer with an e-scooter on the road?

Not in Germany or Austria, where using a trailer with an e-scooter in public traffic is prohibited. In Switzerland it is allowed if the combination is safe to operate and the trailer and load weigh 80 kg at most. On private property it is usually possible with the operator’s consent (as of October 2026, not legal advice).

How much luggage can I take on an e-scooter?

That depends on your scooter’s maximum load, which is stated in the user manual. Your body weight, clothes and luggage all count. The top case takes up to 7 kg. Anything heavier belongs in a trailer, because it carries the load on its own wheels.

Which solution suits you?

If you mainly carry small items, the bag is enough. For a helmet and shopping on the way home, the top case fits. For anything over 7 kg you need a trailer, and you check first whether it is allowed in your country and on your route. Before ordering, measure the width and thickness of your deck so that the hitch and mounting kit fit. If you have questions, you can reach us through the contact form.

E-scooter with a Hinterher cargo trailer and Scitch trailer hitch on a nature trail by the water

E-Scooter Trailers for Dive Centers and Dive Schools

An e-scooter trailer for dive centers is useful on the center’s own premises: for short, recurring routes such as from the compressor room to the jetty or from the storeroom to the entry point. The limit is weight. Depending on the model, our Hinterher trailers carry a payload of 36 to 55 kg, and heavy steel cylinders reach that figure quickly. In Germany, towing a trailer with an e-scooter is not permitted on public roads; on private premises it is generally possible with the consent of the operator.

In this article we show how to calculate the payload per trip, which trailer suits cylinders and which suits equipment, and how to secure scuba tanks on the trailer.

Which routes at a dive center suit an e-scooter trailer best

Suitable routes are fixed, paved paths on your own premises that the team covers several times a day with equipment. Typical routes are:

  • from the compressor room to the cylinder issue point or the boat landing
  • from the equipment store to the entry point or the training area
  • from the rinse area back to the store
  • from the guest car park to the dive center

A scooter and trailer combination does not belong on jetties that are narrow, floating or wet. Uncouple the trailer there and pull it the last stretch by hand.

How many scuba tanks fit on a trailer?

The number of cylinders you may load per trip depends on the trailer’s payload, not on its volume. Calculate as follows:

  1. Add up the weight of each cylinder, filled and with valve, as stated by the manufacturer.
  2. Add other items such as weights or equipment boxes.
  3. Compare the total with the trailer’s payload. Check whether the manufacturer states the payload or the total load including the trailer. In the second case, subtract the empty weight.
  4. Also check the specifications of your e-scooter’s manufacturer.

We deliberately do not state a fixed towing load for the hitch. It depends on the e-scooter and on the trailer manufacturer’s specifications. If in doubt, stay below the lowest of these values and make two trips.

Box trailer or open Hinterher cargo trailer

The open cargo trailer is the better choice for cylinders, the box trailer for sensitive equipment. Both are made by the manufacturer Hinterher, assembled by hand and fitted with a Thule-compatible drawbar. The figures are taken from our product pages (as of October 2026):

Box trailer Cargo trailer H series
Design closed aluminum box, dust-proof and splash-proof, removable lid open load bed, aluminum chassis, side panel and cover
Sizes 73, 115, 137 or 156 liters Hmini, Hmax light, Hxxl light (inside dimensions 63 x 41 to 84 x 61 cm)
Empty weight 14.4 to 22.5 kg 8.1 to 10 kg
Total load including trailer 65 kg 45 kg (Hmini 45) or 65 kg
Payload 42.5 to 50.6 kg depending on size 36 kg (Hmini 45), otherwise 55 kg
Load securing 4 strap eyelets, latches for padlocks and shackle locks strap system on the side panel
Suspension optional optional

For scuba tanks, the Hinterher cargo trailer in the Hmax light or Hxxl light version is the better choice. It carries 55 kg and weighs only 8.8 or 10 kg itself.

The box trailer suits regulators, dive computers and spare parts. The box stays clean, can be locked and left on the jetty. In return, it carries less because of the heavier box: 42.5 kg for 156 liters up to 50.6 kg for 73 liters.

We deliberately set these weight limits conservatively for use with an e-scooter. If you need more payload, we will be glad to advise you and then recommend an overrun brake. We configure the trailer individually for this.

Securing scuba tanks on the trailer

Scuba tanks must not roll or fall over while driving, and the valve needs protection. The divers’ organization DAN Europe advises not to stand cylinders upright but to wedge them so they cannot move (How to Transport a Scuba Tank). PADI also recommends always securing tanks so they cannot fall over or roll (PADI on scuba tanks).

On the trailer, this means in practice:

  • Load cylinders lying down and fix them with straps, either on the strap system of the side panel or on the strap eyelets of the box.
  • Fill gaps with equipment so nothing slides around.
  • Protect the valves and do not let them stick out over the edge.
  • Do not leave full cylinders in the trailer in the sun longer than necessary.

The last point has a technical reason. According to DAN, the internal pressure of a cylinder rises with temperature, and valve damage is a common cause of injuries (DAN, Cylinder Safety).

Include these points in your operating instructions, together with approved routes, adapted speed and regular checks of the hitch, wheels and drawbar.

Which hitch fits the Hinterher trailers

The Hinterher trailers have a Thule-compatible drawbar. On the e-scooter you therefore need the Scitch trailer hitch with Thule adapter, available in the starter package with hitch and adapter. The hitch is attached to the deck with four bolts, without drilling, and fits almost all common e-scooters. Choose the size by deck width (S up to 17 cm, M 17.1 to 22 cm, L 22.1 to 25 cm) and the mounting set by deck thickness, as described in the size table on the product page.

Where may the trailer be used? (as of October 2026)

In Germany, towing a trailer with personal light electric vehicles is not permitted in public road traffic (Section 8 eKFV, German). This ban remains in place after the amendment of the eKFV. On private premises, operation is generally possible with the consent of the operator.

Check therefore which paths actually belong to your premises. Lakeside paths, access roads to lakes and harbor roads are often public.

  • Austria: Since 1 May 2026, towing a trailer with an e-scooter is not permitted (WKO on the 36th StVO amendment, German).
  • Switzerland: Trailers on e-scooters (E-Trottinett) are permitted if the combination is operationally safe, the trailer including load is no more than 1.00 m wide, trailer plus load weigh no more than 80 kg and the load overhangs no more than 50 cm at the rear. In their standard version, our Hinterher trailers stay below this limit with a total load of no more than 65 kg.
  • Other countries: The respective national law applies, which you should check locally.

You can find details with sources on our page E-scooter with trailer: what is allowed?. Also check with your insurer whether trailer operation is covered, especially if staff or guests drive. This section does not constitute legal advice.

Checklist before you buy

  1. Are the planned routes on your own or non-public premises?
  2. How much weight is carried per trip, and does it fit the trailer’s payload?
  3. What does your e-scooter’s manufacturer permit?
  4. Do you mainly transport cylinders or mainly equipment?
  5. Do you need more payload than stated? Then an overrun brake is part of it.
  6. Does your insurance cover trailer operation?
  7. Where does the ride end, and how do you continue by hand from there?

If you would like to go through these points for your dive center or need a configuration with more payload, contact us.

Frequently asked questions

May I transport scuba tanks with an e-scooter trailer on the road?

Not in Germany and Austria, where towing a trailer with an e-scooter is prohibited in public traffic. In Switzerland it is permitted under certain conditions, including a maximum of 80 kg for trailer and load. On private premises it is generally possible with the consent of the operator (as of October 2026, not legal advice).

Which trailer is suitable for scuba tanks?

The open Hinterher cargo trailer in the Hmax light or Hxxl light version. It carries a payload of 55 kg with an empty weight of 8.8 or 10 kg.

How much can the box trailer carry?

The total load is 65 kg including the trailer. After deducting the empty weight, 42.5 to 50.6 kg remain for the load, depending on the size of the box.

Are the trailers available with a brake?

Yes, on request. The overrun brake is not part of the standard range in the shop. If you want to transport more than the stated payload, we explicitly recommend it and configure the trailer individually after a consultation.

E-scooter with Scitch trailer hitch and hand cart trailer at a marina directly by the water

E-scooters with trailers in marinas and yacht harbors: flexible logistics right to the dock

In marinas and yacht harbors, there are many short trips every day: from the parking lot to the harbor office, from storage to the dock, from the restroom facility to the workshop, or from the service area to the transient berth. Luggage, tools, cleaning supplies, spare parts, provisions, or boat accessories need to be moved.

Large vehicles are often too unwieldy for these tasks. Carrying everything by hand costs time and energy. A practical solution for many harbor operations is therefore an e-scooter with trailer. They’re quiet, maneuverable, and ideal for short transport routes around the harbor grounds.

A trailer is especially useful when it can be detached from the e-scooter with just a few simple steps and used as a hand cart. This way, materials can first be comfortably transported across the grounds with the scooter. On narrow, floating, or uneven docks, you can then continue without the scooter.

Why Marinas Need Special Transport Solutions

Yacht harbors aren’t ordinary work areas. The pathways are often narrow, many areas are right by the water, and guests move across the grounds with bags, equipment, or groceries. At the same time, harbormaster and service teams need to be able to respond quickly.

Typical tasks in a marina include:

  • Luggage transport from parking lot to berth
  • Transport of tools and spare parts
  • Supplying docks with materials
  • Cleaning restroom facilities and harbor areas
  • Transport of lines, fenders, cables, or hoses
  • Support during events, regattas, or peak season
  • Service runs between harbor office, storage, workshop, and dock system

An e-scooter with trailer for the yacht harbor fills the gap between hand cart and larger service vehicle.

The Decisive Advantage: Trailers with Hand Cart Functionality

In a marina, the drivable path often doesn’t end directly at the boat. Docks in particular require special caution. Many dock systems are narrow, floating, or slippery when wet. An e-scooter setup shouldn’t be used everywhere in those areas.

That’s why a trailer is especially practical when it can be quickly detached from the scooter and used as a hand cart. The process is simple:

  • Transport materials across the harbor grounds with the e-scooter.
  • Detach the trailer before the dock or at a safe transfer point.
  • Pull the trailer as a hand cart the rest of the way to the boat, berth, or service point.

This keeps transport comfortable without the scooter having to go into areas that aren’t suitable for it.

Which Trailers Are Suitable for Marinas?

For use in marinas and yacht harbors, operators shouldn’t just focus on price. The waterfront environment places higher demands on materials, construction, and everyday usability.

A suitable trailer should ideally have the following features:

  • quick conversion from trailer to hand cart
  • stable connection to the e-scooter trailer hitch
  • sufficient load capacity for tools, luggage, or boat accessories
  • good rolling performance on pavement, asphalt, and harbor pathways
  • secure loading capability
  • robust frame
  • high-quality corrosion protection if possible
  • easy cleaning after use

Corrosion protection in particular is important. In marinas, trailers are exposed to moisture, spray, salt air, and changing weather conditions. Cheap trailers can rust faster or lose stability. For professional use in harbor operations, higher-quality trailers are generally the better choice.

Corrosion Protection: Why Quality Is Especially Important at the Harbor

A trailer used in a yacht harbor has to withstand more than a simple recreational cart. Humid air, rain, spray, dirt, and depending on location, salt air all stress materials and connection parts.

That’s why marina operators should pay attention to high-quality components. Good options include, for example:

  • galvanized or corrosion-protected metal parts
  • robust wheels and bearings
  • weather-resistant loading surfaces
  • stable hitch and drawbar solutions
  • easy-to-clean surfaces
  • solid fasteners and connection elements

A high-quality trailer usually costs more upfront but can pay off in daily harbor use. It’s more durable, looks more professional, and reduces the risk of failures during the season.

E-Scooter with Trailer as a Service Vehicle for Daily Harbor Operations

With a suitable e-scooter trailer hitch from Scitch, a regular scooter becomes a small, flexible service vehicle. For harbormasters and staff, this means: less hauling, shorter trips, and more materials right on site.

It’s especially useful for:

  • daily inspection runs
  • minor repairs
  • cleaning rounds
  • luggage service for transient berths
  • material transport during events
  • quick trips between harbor office and dock system

The e-scooter handles fast transport across the grounds. The detachable trailer takes over the final stretch to the boat. Operators can find suitable options, for example, under e-scooter trailers or as a bundle package of trailer and hitch.

More Comfort for Guests and Berth Users

An e-scooter with trailer can also make the stay more pleasant for guests. Anyone arriving with bags, provisions, sailing gear, or equipment doesn’t have to carry everything across the harbor grounds themselves.

A luggage service from the parking lot to the dock or near the berth is a visible added value. Especially at larger marinas, transient harbors, or facilities with long distances, this service can stand out positively. For operators, this creates a modern impression: the marina appears organized, service-oriented, and well thought out.

Sustainable, Quiet, and Space-Saving

Marinas are often located in environmentally sensitive areas. That’s why quiet and locally emission-free transport solutions fit well with the setting of a yacht harbor.

E-scooters with trailers produce no local emissions during use, require little space, and are significantly quieter than many motorized vehicles. This improves the quality of stay for guests and reduces unnecessary traffic on the grounds.

Sustainability is also increasingly being discussed in the marina industry. As a supplementary external source, the article “Marinas werden grün” in float Magazin is suitable, which addresses the shift toward more sustainable harbor operations.

Safety: Clear Rules for Grounds and Docks

For use in daily harbor operations to work, operators should establish clear rules. Especially important is the separation between drivable areas and zones where the trailer is better moved by hand.

Useful rules include, for example:

  • Use scooters only on approved pathways
  • be especially cautious on docks at all times
  • detach trailer before narrow or floating dock systems
  • walking speed in guest and waterfront areas
  • no overloading of the trailer
  • check secure load before each trip
  • regular inspection of hitch, wheels, and connection parts

Legal Notice for Germany

In Germany, operating trailers with electric micromobility vehicles is not permitted in public road traffic. Relevant for this is § 8 of the Electric Micromobility Vehicles Ordinance. For marinas, use on private or non-public grounds is therefore primarily of interest.

Operators should check before use which areas of their facility are private, publicly accessible, or relevant under road traffic law. Coordination with insurance or legal counsel is also recommended, especially if guests are to use the service. Additional information is available from Scitch under Insurance for E-Scooters with Trailers.

Practical Tip: Consider Complete Solution Instead of Individual Components

If you’re looking for not just a hitch but a coordinated solution right away, you can check out a complete package of e-scooter, hitch, and trailer. For marinas with special requirements, individual consultation via the Scitch contact page is also recommended.

Conclusion: The Best Solution for Marinas Is Flexible

For marinas and yacht harbors, not just any trailer will do. Especially practical is a high-quality trailer that can be quickly detached from the e-scooter and used as a hand cart.

This creates a flexible transport solution for all daily harbor operations: the e-scooter handles quick trips across the grounds, the hand cart helps with the final stretch to the boat or dock.

With good construction, adequate corrosion protection, and a suitable trailer hitch, the e-scooter becomes a quiet, space-saving, and efficient helper for modern marina logistics.
