Am I automatically insured with a trailer on my e-scooter?
Not automatically. It depends on your insurance plan. Many standard plans don’t address trailers. However, there are insurers that explicitly include trailer operation – for example, Itzehoer, Adam Riese, and BGV. When selecting, make sure there’s a green checkmark in the plan details next to “trailer coverage.”
What does "trailer coverage" mean in an e-scooter insurance policy?
This clause means that damage you cause with your trailer is covered by your e-scooter’s liability insurance – as long as the trailer is connected to the scooter and doesn’t require its own insurance. This also includes situations where the trailer detaches during the ride and is still in motion.
Can I ride my e-scooter with a trailer on public roads?
In Germany, trailer operation on public roads, paths, and squares is not permitted under current law (§ 8 eKFV). Improper use can lead to disputes with the insurance company in case of a claim. Operation is permitted on private or non-public areas – for example, on campsites, marinas, company premises, or vacation resorts – provided the operator consents. What happens to my insurance coverage if I cause an accident on a campsite?
If your plan includes trailer coverage, liability protection generally applies on private property like a campsite as well. What matters is not the location, but whether trailer operation is contractually covered. If in doubt, get written confirmation from your insurer – and keep it.
How do I find insurance that includes trailers for e-scooters?

Does my existing e-scooter insurance also apply abroad with a trailer?
That depends on your plan and the respective country. In Austria and Switzerland, trailer operation is generally possible under certain technical requirements – however, the insurance situation must be clarified separately with your insurer. We recommend getting the terms confirmed in writing before using it abroad.
