The idea is obvious: e-scooters as towing vehicles, a compact trailer for luggage, equipment, or the next camping trip. Technically, it works – but what does the legal situation say? The answer depends on where you ride, which vehicle you use, and in which country you are traveling.

🇩🇪 Is it allowed to pull a trailer with an e-scooter in Germany?
On public roads: No. The eKFV explicitly prohibits trailer operation on public roads in Germany (§ 8 eKFV – see legal text).
On private property: Yes – and this is precisely the strength of the Scitch system. Campsites, marinas, holiday resorts, company premises, golf courses, event areas – wherever public traffic law does not apply, operation with a trailer is possible without problems. You only need the operator’s consent. Scitch was developed precisely for these applications: flexible, safe, and without interfering with the vehicle structure.
What happens in case of a violation?
Anyone who still rides with a trailer on public roads risks a fine of 10 Euros (see fine catalog). However, also consider possible effects on insurance coverage – more on our insurance page.
What changes from 2027?
On December 19, 2025, the Federal Council approved the eKFV amendment. The new regulations will come into force after a transition period at the beginning of March 2027. The prohibition of trailer operation on public ground explicitly remains – nothing changes in this regard. The basis for confirming the prohibition is the BASt evaluation report based on the VKU specialist article (2019). From our perspective, outdated data was used – we are therefore working with a university to collect new data.

🇨🇭 Is it allowed to pull a trailer with an e-scooter (E-Trottinett) in Switzerland?
In Switzerland, pulling a trailer with an e-scooter – in Swiss German, E-Trottinett – is officially permitted – this is confirmed by the Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) in its current regulations (as of July 2025).
Trailers on e-scooters are permissible if the combination of towing vehicle and trailer is safe to operate, the trailer is not wider than 1.00 m, and the operating weight does not exceed 80 kg – as stated in Art. 210 VTS and Art. 68 Para. 7 VRV. Additionally: In Switzerland, e-scooters are legally equivalent to bicycles (Art. 42 Para. 4 VRV), confirmed by the Federal Office for Accident Prevention (BFU).
What does this mean for e-scooter riders in Switzerland?
Adhere to the defined limits: maximum trailer width 1.00 m, maximum operating weight of the trailer 80 kg, and the combination must be safe to ride. An e-scooter trailer is therefore legal on public roads in Switzerland – provided that the towing vehicle and the trailer meet the technical requirements. The Scitch coupling system is designed precisely for these requirements. Nevertheless, it should be noted that individual officials or authorities might have a different opinion, as we are not aware of a clear definition or legal precedent.
On private property: Campsites, marinas, holiday resorts, company premises – operation with an e-scooter and trailer is unproblematic anyway, as long as the operator agrees. Scitch was developed precisely for these applications.

🇦🇹 Is it allowed to pull a trailer with an e-scooter in Austria?
Previously in Austria, e-scooters were equated with bicycles, and trailer operation was therefore possible – both on public roads and on private property.
However, this is expected to change from May 1, 2026: A government bill (36th StVO amendment) already submitted to the National Council provides for an explicit prohibition in § 68a Para. 2 – wording: “Pulling a trailer is also impermissible.” Scitch is actively monitoring developments and has submitted a statement. If you, as a private person, wish to submit a statement, you can do so here. On private property, operation remains unaffected in any case.
Anyone traveling with a trailer in Austria should continuously check the current legal situation. On private property – campsites, company premises, tourist facilities – operation is unproblematic in any case, as long as the operator agrees. Scitch was developed precisely for these applications.
